National Shortage of Flu Mist

MedImmune, the Flu Mist manufacturer, has announced that a production problem will significantly reduce the number of Flu Mist doses available for the 2015-2016 flu season. Although it is unclear when additional Flu Mist will become available, all Flu Mist doses that have already been shipped are safe and effective.

At this time, Advanced Pediatrics is only scheduling appointments for the injectable form of the flu vaccine. Patients who are in our office for a scheduled appointment are welcome to ask if Flu Mist is available. It is possible that very small quantities of Flu Mist may trickle in, but not in sufficient quantities to schedule additional appointments in advance.

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older. Children 9 years of age and younger may need two doses of the vaccine to be protected.

We do not recommend delaying flu vaccination in hopes that Flu Mist will become available -- it takes approximately two weeks for full protection against the flu and we typically begin seeing flu cases in mid/late fall.
